commentary-Hegel 321-329
Hegel ss 321-329
The argument outline presented by our classmate Zac refers to Hegel conclusion on the duty citizens have for their state; to defend their state individuality with their lives.
Hegel suggested on his writings on the subject of self consciousness that we become aware and conscious of ourselves through the eyes of others and this implies to the need of individuals to serve their states with their life's if need be,even if this is not what one might think to be in their individual zone of comfort but as long as it serves the need of the state and others can see it and think of it so high that the people of the state who see the sacrifice appreciate it, that should suffice because to Hegel conscious is seen through others eyes.
On the other hand I must say that I feel a bit confused with this idea. If I think of myself and action based on my own satisfaction on my acts and or intensions then how would I be able to trick my soul and mind to think consciously while disregarding myself satisfaction and gain of self confidence from others observation on what I do? And this is an example to link it to the men fighting for the state's good will. Would me act of satisfying others be the main purpose then the highest goal once reached ( satisfying others) bring my self consciousness as if this is an intermediate link to feeling great about my act rather than it been from the first step of the battle in taking the chance to act for the state individuality and protect it's identity and well being.
In the aim to answer the questions I posed, I feel that this whole concept and analysis hegel presented of the individual self consciousness gives me a sense of excuse of attraction statement for many to show more risk and will to give up more for the sake of showing courage rather than my opinion on one to do what they can do best and serve the purpose of their been in whichever class or category they might have been employed to serve in. The courage my be pointed to based on ones ability to show success in doing what others fear to do but isn't courage not the goal for one of doing anything but rather the implication that comes along with ones good self identification to providing what the task asks to get done and doing it when one can feel ability to succeed at it rather than taking someone else's better fit position.
The example of soldier is to serve the purpose and aim he believes he can do better than another person and giving something the country needs and he owes his society been who he is. A courageous isn't courageous because he is soldier but A soldier is a soldier because he is courageous. Courage is used to serve the purpose but the other way around.
In response to my idea on how one feels of himself based on his will and intensions and goals to be that he tries to achieve in life, I think Hegel might suggest that up until the point of the goal not been reached, our mind in not capable to distinguish what it is that we are doing because the result or final outcome has not been reached yet and therefore the self is not able to process any great work they re doing but instead the outside world who is observing from far and can see the aim of the other's action is the judge and their judgment are to bring to this I individual their self consciousness where they feel the greatness of their work. In saying so Hegel would probably think that ones intensions are irrelevant in the self consciousness although the self consciousness is in the reality which is the outcome perceived from other through the existence of the intention lead by the individual, the intensions thereafter is a leading factor to the reality.
